AMIR Fund Founders Commit at Least 2.5% of Their Annual Income to Those in Need

The founders of the AMIR Fund for Education, Science and Technology, Ridwan Sorunke and Mariam Sorunke, have reaffirmed their commitment to give at least 2.5% of their annual income to charitable causes every year. Their giving funds the Fund's education programmes and its work empowering communities and supporting people in need.

Both founders began their education at African Church Grammar School, Abeokuta. Ridwan went on to Obafemi Awolowo University and Johns Hopkins University. Mariam went on to the University of Ibadan and the University of Chicago. They founded the AMIR Fund as a way of giving back to society.

Rather than make one-off donations, they placed their gifts in a charitable trust administered by First Trustees Nigeria Limited, so that the returns can fund prizes, scholarships and research grants year after year. Making the commitment a fixed share of income means it continues in lean years as well as good ones.

The founders are inviting their friends to join the AMIR Fund as trustees and to give alongside them at the same 2.5% standard or more. Trustees can support education and community empowerment through the Fund, or work with it to create a named prize, scholarship or research award.

“Giving works best as a habit, not an event,” said Ridwan Sorunke. “Many of us owe our careers to a teacher, a school, a community or a scholarship that came at a time of need. If each of us gave back a small, fixed share every year, we could change what is possible for the next generation.”
