For immediate release · 8 October 2026

The AMIR Fund for Education, Science and Technology has opened applications for the AMIR Fund Medical Scholarship Program, its first national scholarship. The programme will award up to 20 tuition scholarships to high-achieving students of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) and Dental Surgery (BDS) from low-income households and faith-based minority communities.

Each scholarship covers 100% of tuition and mandatory school fees, paid directly to the university. Awards renew each year until graduation, subject to academic performance. The programme aims to strengthen the representation of under-represented students in the medical profession, where the cost of a long degree forces many talented students to pause or abandon their studies.

Applicants must be Nigerian, in 200 Level or above, with a minimum cumulative CGPA of 3.50 on a 5.00 scale, at one of eleven eligible government universities: University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University Kano, University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria, University of Benin, Lagos State University, Olabisi Onabanjo University, and the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta.

More than 60 students applied in the first weeks of the call. Applications are scored on four published criteria:

  • Academic record (40%)
  • Financial need (30%)
  • Personal statement (15%)
  • Interview (15%)

An independent panel of reviewers will assess applications and interview shortlisted candidates on a rolling basis until 27 November 2026. Scholars commit to maintaining a CGPA of 3.50 or higher, sharing results each semester, joining a mentoring programme and an annual convening, and giving back through community health outreach.

“Medicine should not be a privilege reserved for families who can afford it,” said Ridwan Sorunke, Founder and Trustee of the AMIR Fund. “We are looking for students who have already proved themselves in the classroom. Our job is to remove the fees so they can finish what they started.”

Applications close on Friday, 30 October 2026. Students can apply online at forms.gle/fT1brX6sW2D2ENFF9. Applying is free, and the AMIR Fund never asks for payment at any stage.
